Gear ratios help determine how easy or hard it is to pedal your bike at different speeds or on different terrain. They’re the relationship between your front chainring (or chainrings) and your rear cassette (the cogs on the back wheel).
Your gear ratio affects:
How hard it is to pedal (especially uphill)
How fast you can go at a given cadence (pedal speed)
How efficiently you use your energy while riding
Lower gear ratios (small front ring, big rear cog) make it easier to pedal—great for climbing hills.
Higher gear ratios (big front ring, small rear cog) make you go faster—better for flat roads or descending.
Use this interactive tool to see how different chainring and cassette combinations affect your speed and effort:
You can enter your own chainring and cassette sizes, wheel size, cadence, and more to visualize how each gear behaves.
